With Microsoft Windows Vista (R) available already for MSDN subscribers (which probably includes MOST of the bigger enterprises) and corporations by the end of the year, you have to wonder why only for them? After evaluations that I performed, I am wondering what corporations are evaluating? I mean besides software development companies, I don’t see a major rush towards it. Windows Vista introduces a boatload of new security features, which for the home user and new startup company is really great. However, myself working in a corporation, I don’t think corporations will jump fast on the Vista bandwagon.

Newly purchased laptops generally get imaged by a corporate OS image usually that includes all necessary applications already (MS Office, disk encryption? etc.). Corporations have usually partners to supply their hardware, mostly a certain type or model , not changing much in at least 3 years.

Suffice to say, most bigger corporations an quite a few smaller companies also, have internal Anti-Virus and Firewall infrastructure. They have usually invested millions into these infrastructures and licensing deals have been made already. These companies will not change their structure for Vista, at least not in the short run. In most cases the IT Department waits at least 6 months after release before evaluation projects are started.

Now, i took Microsoft Windows Vista for a small spin in the security department and I have to say, I am impressed and annoyed by it. First of all, its confusing, VERY confusing to get anything done. The Welcome center is a nice and good central starting point however it has 2 sections: Get started with Windows and Offers from Microsoft. So right away you are being shoved links to their online stores into your face.

After a little while a small icon appeared that my PC was not protected,

I say OK Cool! and I happen to have a new Symantec Norton Internet Security 2007 , so lets install it. I mean it is version 2007 (implies the year, yes?) and it is brand new. Symantec definitely had access to Vista’s Development versions. So I installed it, at least I tried to. The following 4 screenshots are what the installation did.
