How the internet is decaying and professionals are suffering…(The Kathy Sierra story)
Over the last few days I followed what, I am sorry to say, I considered as a “prank” or the usual “smudging” of a tech celebrity. Kathy Sierra , who is the author of numerous books, of which I own a few as well, got slandered on a popular blog by what seemed to be adults. I say seemed to be because their writing behaviour and comments, as well as their other actions such as pictures etc., suggest otherwise. You can read it all on her full description . I would like to stand with most of the people that have linked and commented on her and other blogs regarding this issue. It is not something that should be tolerated. Even though there is free speech and all, what line is the border of this free speech and where does it become criminal? Free speech is there to protect someone’s opinion and so that the individual can voice their opinion and be heard. It does not mean that you can create photoshop images and slander a person. Or make comments about how you will kill her or commit sexual crimes.
All this goes beyond what is acceptable in my opinion and even though I strongly believe in free speech, criminal intent is not one of the things that should be protected by this.
Blogs come and pop up like flowers in the spring nowadays but only a few actually are relevant and contain good solid information, or are a focus point for people who want to exchange knowledge, learn and just know things. These blogs aren’t that common and it looks like “the mob” is getting to them too. Shame on you!

Ya I think what’s happened to Kathy is really ugly and horrible. It gives the blogosphere a bad name. I mean we should have some measures so that kinda thing doesn’t happen again.
agreed, but how. I think the de-centralized nature of the internet and the fact that anyone can and is blogging without restrictions kinda makes it difficult. On top of that its all about the freedom of speech in the end. Tough nut to crack but Kathy’s issue is criminal (or VERY close to it) in my opinion.
