The layout of my small home office network is as follows (hardware specs included):
DNS Domain: kfr-solutions.?
Machines:
ShortyJANUS: Shorty gave up. Shorty was with me many years and slowly part by part got replaced. The power supply was the last and it finally got replaced. A Server rename to JANUS took place then. RIP SHORTY! (DualCore 2.6ghz,3G Ram, 1TB Harddrives, DVDRW,no Display).Janus is currently the defacto server. This little baby runs it all: DNS, SAMBA, LAMP, LPD, WLAN ROUTING, FTP, SSH and VMWARE hosting 12 Virtual machines!K****: (iMac G5, 17″ tft, 1.5G Ram, 160GB, WLAN, Bluetooth, DVDR). K**** is the wife’s machine and it is imperative that it works at any given time. Webdesign and Web development as well as school work are the main functions of it- K****2: (Macbook Black, 2GB, 120GB, C2D 2ghz, WLAN, Bluetooth, Bookendz Docking station and 22″ Samsung Monitor, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse). My wife’s workstation fulfilling all her computing needs. It dualboots into Windows but that isn’t used much.
- Strider: (Macbook Pro, 15.4″ tft, Core2Duo, 3GB Ram, 120GB, WLAN, Bluetooth, DVDR). Strider is my personal workhorse and has its ram maxed out. Did I mention it has a sweet DELL 24″ TFT hooked up to it?
Bully: (Cobalt RAQ2, 64MB, 160GB) Bully “bullied” its way in as i thought COOL device and took it home. I am so fascinated by it that Shorty might be replaced by a RAQ4 soon. Right now Bully runs SMB shares , DNS and SSHBully has been decomissioned!- xbox: (P3 700mhz, 64MB, 120GB, EvoX mod chip). xbox is my media center for the working room. Also works as one of the gaming consoles and as an ftp server
Network Devices:
SMC ADSL Router/FirewallThe SMC got replaced by a A-Link: The main gateway for the network, hooked up to a 24/1mbit ADSL line it is also the main firewall and port forwarder.- DLINK Gigabit Switch: This nifty little box connects all machines as Gigabit is a bit faster
DLINK 2000APThis got replaced by an ASUS Deluxe WLAN AP: Wlan Access point. This baby is hooked up to Shorty on a second NIC and the access is heavily filtered. Working on an OpenVPN implementation for the mobile “users”
Other Devices:
Asus USB2.0 16X DVDRW
This is all hooked up together and working very nicely. And don’t worry, Security was at the heart of the design:)
